Speaking Truth to Power – Right Rev Mariann Budde

About one week ago at the Washington National Cathedral, the Right Reverend Mariann Budde gave a magnificent sermon about unity and mercy. She gave this message with President Trump and Vice President Vance seated in the front row alongside their families. Rev Budde’s words created a viral moment of content – some found her words stirring and moving, others attacked her for being inappropriate. The President even went as far as to say that he is owed an apology.

HERE is a link to her sermon.

Two questions that I would ask anyone who watches or reads her message:
1. Was anything she said contrary to the teachings of Scripture?
2. Was anything she said dishonest?

As I listened to her thoughtful and humble message, I resonated with her remarks because they were grounded in the teachings of Christ. I also resonated because she spoke truth. As I mentioned in my message on Sunday morning, LOVE requires truth. It might be hard to hear, but it must be said.

AND, the Right Reverend Budde spoke these words in kindness and humility. She wasn’t attacking or slandering or hateful. She called for mercy and unity.

Additionally, Bishop Julius C. Trimble shared his own response to some of the decisions of the current administration. Here is what he said in the latest edition of the General Board of Church and Society. You will notice that his article is titled, ‘All Other Ground Is Sinking Sand’. We sang these very words in our service on Sunday morning.

I hope these messages are an encouragement to you as you process and navigate the complex times that we live in and how we can show up for others.

More to come and always more to do!
