beliefs and values

There is room at the table. Peace invites all people to grow and participate in reconciliation. Our faith animates this mission.

We are happy to share the tenants of our faith.

Beliefs

Love

Peace is a progressive, multigenerational community of faith called to engage our world through the power of God’s love.

We seek to accomplish this by respectfully:

  • affirming that all people are a gift of God’s love
  • nurturing ourselves and inviting all into God’s love and peace through eclectic worship, exploring questions of faith and addressing challenging issues of our day
  • inspiring hope through community action, advocacy and service, taking our faith into the world together.

Statement of Reconciliation

Peace United Methodist Church is a place of peace for all that choose to enter the doors. We seek to be an inclusive Christian community believing that we are all children of God, and that God loves us all equally regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, physical, mental and emotional abilities. As a Reconciling Congregation we specifically welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends, and embrace them as full members of the family of God.

We respect the diversity of opinions and the Scripture, tradition, experience and reason that lead us to various conclusions, believing that prejudice, hatred, and discrimination directed toward any individual or group are contrary to the life and spirit of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we shall work to eliminate prejudice and discriminatory practices within our church, our community, and ourselves. With God’s help we shall strive to build bridges and promote a ministry of reconciliation.

Marriage for All

We, as a United Methodist congregation, have committed to supporting and honoring same-sex marriages in the same way that we support and honor other marriages. We believe that banning same-sex marriage is inconsistent with Christ’s teaching, and the constitution of The United Methodist Church. We fully recognize and assume the risks associated with these commitments, because we are called upon by God, through Jesus Christ, to resist injustice and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. Our sanctuary is open for all to make a commitment of love and fidelity through Christian marriage.

Values

Community

We welcome and affirm all people, as each person is a unique gift of God’s love.

Compassion

We strive to serve those who experience marginalization, oppression, or systemic injustice.

Action

We want to tangibly remove barriers that hinder spiritual, communal, systemic, and personal growth.

Stewardship

We make efforts to tend and nurture creation, honoring those who have previously inhabited the land, and responsibly using our resources with sustainability as our highest goal.

Balance

We remain curious and inquisitive when science or stories or sacred texts cause tension.

Openness

We are guided by the Christian Scriptures that transform our faith and shared life together.
