Sunday Preview (June 18, 2023)

Our Summer Series: The Music That Made Us

What songs have resonated with you? What lyrics have put words to your longings and your struggles? How has music touched your soul and impacted your faith? This summer we will highlight the music that has made us.

Send me your songs! (jason@peaceumc.com) And when you do, tell me why it has resonated with you.

THIS SUNDAY: Cat’s In The Cradle by Harry Chapin | Generations of _______ | I love what Harry Chapin says at the beginning of the video I’ve linked to…that this song is dedicated to his son Josh and that it scares him. Isn’t that what parenting is all about?! We want to be present and we want to do our best, but we are scared that we might not be good enough.

In the Bible, God warns the people that our choices impact the trajectory of generations. This is both great news…and terribly frightening. But we must always remember that God is with us!

Pride @ Peace

At Peace, we affirm the dignity and worth of all persons and celebrate the image of God found in each unique child of God.

The Minnesota Reconciling Congregations group that we highlighted a couple weeks ago is still looking for people to volunteer at their booth during the Pride festivities June 24th and 25th. Here is what they sent me:

Twin Cities PRIDE 2023 is less than two weeks away.

THANK YOU to all who have already volunteered to staff the MN Reconciling PRIDE booth in Loring Park on June 24 & 25.

We have a few volunteer slots left on Friday (for booth setup), and a significant number of slots on Sunday that are still available.

As of Monday evening, the needs are:
Friday, 9:00-11:00 a.m.:  Booth Setup: 3 volunteers.
Saturday, 2:00-4:00 p.m.: Clergy volunteer
Sunday, 9:45 a.m.- Noon:  Lead Volunteer (if you’ve volunteered in the booth in the past, you are qualified to fill this slot), 4 volunteer slots.
Sunday, Noon-2:00 p.m.:  Lead Volunteer.
Sunday, 2:00-4:00 p.m.:  1 volunteer slot.
Sunday, 4:00-6:00 p.m.:  Lead Volunteer; 4 volunteer slots.  This tends to be busy time. We ordered 20,000 Peace Medallions this year so there should still be medallions to handout. If you’re volunteering from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and could stay for a second shift, that would be helpful!
Sunday, 6 p.m. Take Down: We have just two people for the take down; NEED 4 more volunteers.  If you’re volunteering for an earlier shift and plan to check out the festival, when you’re finished, please consider signing up to return and help with take down. More hands/bodies will get this task completed more quickly.

If you can help with any of these times or know someone who would like to be part of this outreach to let people know that there are UMCs that welcome and affirm LGBTQ+ persons, go to https://ttsu.me/8abvvr to select your slot.

THANK YOU for helping make our presence at PRIDE a success!

Juneteenth – Monday, June 19th

“Juneteenth (June 19) marks the day in 1865 when U.S. federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure all African Americans were freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.”

Mowing Help Needed

Weekly volunteers are needed to maintain the Peace grounds. Volunteers are asked to mow sometime between Thursday and Saturday (please avoid Saturday mornings during the church services happening then), so the lawn is in good shape for Sunday services.  It takes roughly 3+ hours to mow/ trim the entire area.

Tim Fried (651-600-1316) is the contact person for using the lawnmowers, etc.- please contact him if you haven’t used the equipment before. Peace has two riding mowers, one push mower, and a weed whipper.

Faith Support with Sojourners Magazine

“Sojourners Magazine has been a key part of my personal faith support plan since I first encountered it while in seminary in the late 1980’s. Issues come out monthly. I read each one cover to cover – breakfast reading that I always look forward to!

“As I finished the most recent issue, I noticed a program Sojourners has where they distribute copies at a significant discount ($20/year as opposed to $40/year for the regular individual rate) to group members who gather together regularly to use the magazine for group reflection and discussion.

So I thought I would see if there are any Peace Church participants who are interested in forming a Sojourners faith support group.

“Please send me an email at tidballs@gmail.com if this idea sounds interesting to you.

“Those who express an interest will help to decide the organizational details for the group (how often we meet, group process, etc.) Thanks for considering this opportunity.” Dave Tidball

Peace Gardening Group

It’s almost time to work on the Peace gardens.  Every year, the gardening group plants some annuals around Memorial Day, then volunteers to do watering, weeding, and deadheading on a weekly basis.  Two volunteers per week are needed.

Peace Prayers

Do you have a specific need?

Do you want to share a specific celebration of gratitude?

Peace Prayers is a space to share specific prayer requests and specific celebrations of gratitude. These are not going to be private…these are public. Our plan is to put them in the bulletin and/ or on a slide in The Commons, and include them in the Tuesday News weekly email.

We invite you to share with one another so we can be a praying people – both in times of hurt and struggle, and in times of joy and celebration.
