Hugh’s News for Feb. 7, 2010

By admin ~ February 4th, 2010. Filed under: Hugh's News, News.

Sunday, Feb. 7 is the Souper Bowl.   This year we will again set out soup pots by the offering plates.  Deposit money in the soup pots for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf.   The idea is that you will feel guilty enough about all of the empty calories you will consume during the Super Bowl Football Game to want to give an equal amount of money to people who are going without food.   We join thousands of other congregations each year in receiving the Souper Bowl offering.   Here are the numbers as of today:

  • 17,126 – groups signed up to participate
  • 50 – US states represented
  • 6 – countries represented
  • $964,778 – collections reported already
  • $10 million raised in 2009
  • Over $60 million raised since 1990

Next week I will tell you more about a project being put together by Judy Jerde (more energy than the energizer rabbit) at White Bear UMC.   We will be one of the cooperating churches in their goal to put together 1000
Health Kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief.  These are kits that UMCOR distributes after earthquakes or other disasters.  Here is a link to the UMCOR site for information about the health kits. http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor/getconnected/supplies/health-kit/
